Overview
Built By Penguins ("we", "us", "our") operates the website builtbypenguins.com and its tools, including Monster Modifier (Mon Mod). This privacy policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your choices regarding that data.
Data We Collect
Account data
If you create an account, we store:
- Your email address (used for authentication)
- A display name and avatar (if you set one)
- Your authentication provider (Google, email, etc.)
Account data is stored in Supabase, our database and authentication provider. We do not sell or share your email address with third parties.
User-generated content
When you use Monster Modifier, you may save monsters, abilities, spells, custom fields, themes, and notes. This content is stored in our database if you are signed in, or in your browser's local storage if you are not. We do not access, review, or share your saved content.
Feedback and messages
If you use the "Send a Note" feature, your message and any attached tool state data are stored in our database. These are visible only to you and site administrators.
Donation data
Donations are processed by Ko-fi. We receive a notification of your donation amount and Ko-fi username to grant supporter benefits. We do not receive or store your payment details.
Automatic Data Collection
Error reporting
When an import, processing, or export error occurs in Monster Modifier, an anonymous error report is sent automatically. These reports contain only technical data: the imported monster data (from public sources), parsing flags, error messages, and the build version. No personal information is included by default.
Enhanced telemetry (opt-in)
You can optionally enable enhanced telemetry in Account > Privacy. When enabled, error reports also include your browser/device information and any user-created ability text associated with the error. This setting is opt-in, off by default, and can be changed at any time.
Cookies and advertising
We use Google AdSense to display ads on our tools. Google and its advertising partners may use cookies and similar technologies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this site or other websites. Specifically:
- Google uses cookies (including the DoubleClick cookie) to serve ads based on your browsing history.
- You can opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings.
- You can opt out of third-party vendor cookies at www.aboutads.info/choices.
For more information, see Google's Privacy Policy.
Local storage
Monster Modifier uses your browser's local storage to save your session state, display preferences, and cached data. This data stays on your device and is not transmitted to our servers unless you are signed in and choose to sync.
How We Use Your Data
- To provide and maintain our tools and services
- To authenticate your account and sync your saved content across devices
- To grant and manage supporter benefits
- To diagnose and fix errors (via anonymous error reports)

Data Sharing
We do not sell your personal data. We share data only with:
- Supabase: database and authentication hosting
- Google AdSense: advertising (cookies and ad serving)
- Ko-fi: donation processing (they share your Ko-fi username with us)
Your Rights
You can:
- Export your data: Download all your saved monsters, preferences, and local settings from the Account modal.

Data Retention
We retain your account data and saved content for as long as your account exists. Error reports are retained for diagnostic purposes and periodically pruned. If you delete your account, all associated data is permanently removed.

Our tools are not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.
